A BLACK SPACE

OUR pROJECT

A BLACK SPACE is invested in brave space-making, creating a tribal hub for an exchange of ideas and artistic development for innovative Black thinkers and doers. The physical space, using scale, ancient architectural references, and the infinite metaphor of the Universe, will serve as a campus to a community of creatives that honor and push our culture forward. A BLACK SPACE is paying homage to our unique heritage through a visual diary of our past, present, and Afro-futurism to make our dreams accessible and attainable.

A Black Space on Pinterest

This body of work is a collection of thoughts that captures the vibration, color schemes, architectural and cultural references, and aesthetics of what A BLACK SPACE would love to embody in the physical. Each image, curated by our Found(her), Crystal C. Mercer, speaks to the spirit of the facility project in a way that should stir the soul. There is a concentration on the lineage of Black folks, while also incorporating craft, workspace, studios (recording, textile, art, co-working, and fitness), and the overall vision for the grandiose scale for the interior and exterior touches. Be moved into a realm of Blackness, beaming with pride and possibility.

A BLACK FUTURE

A BLACK SPACE is exploring occupying a multi-acre campus to accommodate several cross-sections of art, culture, tradition, and healthy living to address the dismissed and underrepresented needs of Black thinkers and creators. The reason for this change is assessing the lack of safe spaces, brave spaces, and tailored spaces to specifically serve and develop the Black innovators of this time… and the future. One of the unique challenges in the American South, or anywhere for that matter, is the historical, systemic oppression and redlining that has kept Black artists from blossoming. In a place that highjacks our culture while vehemently despising and rejecting us, still, we rise above the challenges and make a way. Currently we are growing the foundational infrastructure, programming, and board leadership. We imagine A BLACK SPACE being our field of dreams, building something that folks can come to and be. A place allies can gather to appreciate, support, and patron our projects. A place to honor our ancestors, predecessors, and each other in the present. A place where we can grow our craft, business, creativity, and connections. This major undertaking will require years of hard work, dedicated partners, and an army of dreamers and doers. A BLACK SPACE will be a necessary component of making The Natural State a cultural mecca of The South.

A BLACK CAMPUS
